Caleb studies freshwater ecosystems with the goal of providing actionable knowledge to managers and policy-makers. His research centers broadly on aquatic-terrestrial linkages, understanding how natural and anthropogenic factors within watersheds determine stream and lake biogeochemistry and energy flow. Caleb actively works in several related research areas within this framework, spanning fundamental and applied perspectives informing environmental issues such as eutrophication, browning, and riparian plant diversity losses: food web trophic bases and subsidies; nutrient cycling facilitated by dead organic matter; greenhouse gas dynamics and anaerobic metabolism; and ecological modeling and forecasting of reservoir water quality.
